Ian M. Church

Philosopher • Researcher • Teacher

At the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science.

I study how human beings form, justify, revise, and communicate their deepest beliefs. My work brings epistemology into conversation with psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and the messy realities of human life.

Current focus

AI, testimony, and digital trust.

Generative AI is reshaping the epistemic environment in which online beliefs are formed. My current work asks how AI-generated counterfeits affect knowledge from digital testimony, and how higher education assessment should adapt in an LLM-shaped world.

Major initiative

Virtues and Vices of Spiritual Yearning.

I am Principal Investigator on a new $2.59M John Templeton Foundation project examining the virtues and vices of spiritual yearning through philosophy, psychology, religious studies, and public-facing scholarship.
